Position Description
The Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost Search Advisory Committee invites nominations and applications for the position of Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost of Texas A&M University. Texas A&M University is a comprehensive, doctoral research university dedicated to the development and dissemination of knowledge in diverse academic and professional fields. While continuing to fulfill its traditional mission as a land-grant/sea-grant/space-grant public institution, the University is expanding its role to meet the changing needs of state, national and international communities. The University is committed to preeminence in teaching, research, and service.
Texas A&M University, the first public institution of higher learning in Texas, holds membership in the Association of American Universities. The University is composed of ten colleges with 2,858 faculty and an enrollment of 45,380 students, and consistently ranks among the country’s top 20 universities in enrollment of National Merit Scholars. The University operates branch campuses in Galveston, Texas, and the state of Qatar and has university centers in Mexico City and Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. The University ranks 18th among U.S. universities in enrollment of international students (approximately 4,000), who currently represent 124 countries. Sponsored research exceeds $500 million annually, placing Texas A&M University among the top 20 universities nationally. The University has an endowment valued at approximately $4.4 billion and an annual operating budget of $1 billion. Texas A&M University recently added 450 new faculty members and is in the midst of the most ambitious construction program in university history.
The Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost serves as deputy to the President and acts for her in her absence. This individual will be responsible for all academic matters, including budgetary oversight for all activities affecting teaching, research and related activities. He or she must provide visionary leadership to the academic and administrative functions of the University; ensure the recruitment and development of excellent faculty, staff and students; mobilize and allocate resources; and create synergy among the colleges, agencies, peer institutions, and external constituencies. The Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost serves as a primary communication link with The Texas A&M University System, government agencies and the legislature, as well as various national university organizations and accrediting agencies. He or she will actively contribute to state and national leadership activities that can advance the stature, reputation and financial status of the University, and will assist the President in development activities.
Qualifications include: an earned doctorate or equivalent; an outstanding record in research and education commensurate with the appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure; and excellence in academic and administrative leadership at the level of dean, provost, and/or other senior administrative position of a major university. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a strong, proven commitment to diversity and globalization; and the ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, students, staff, former students and other external constituencies.
The Search Committee will begin reviewing nominations and applications immediately and will continue to accept nominations and applications until a new Executive Vice President for Academics and Provost is selected.
